What is it?
An evaporative cooler is a device that cools air by passing it through water-saturated pads, using the natural process of evaporation to absorb heat and lower the temperature. It is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional air conditioning, performing best in dry climates where it can also add beneficial moisture to the air.
The Core Science: Evaporation
If you’ve ever stepped out of a swimming pool on a hot, breezy day and suddenly felt chilly, you've experienced evaporative cooling. As the wind blows across your wet skin, the water evaporates. To change from a liquid to a gas (vapor), water requires energy. It pulls that thermal energy (heat) directly from the surrounding air and your skin, dropping the temperature.

How the Machine Works:
An industrial cooler like the Quietaire consists of four main components: a water reservoir, a pump, cooling pads (media), and a massive fan.
- Wetting the Pads: The cooler is connected to a water supply. A small internal water pump pushes this water up to the top of the unit and trickles it down over thick, honeycomb-like cooling pads. These pads are designed to maximize surface area and hold as much moisture as possible.
- Pulling in Hot Air: The large 36-inch fan turns on, creating negative pressure inside the box. This pulls large volumes of hot, dry air from outside the unit directly through the wet cooling pads.
- The Flash Cooling Effect: As the hot air passes through the wet honeycomb material, the water flash-evaporates. The heat in the air is instantly absorbed to fuel this evaporation.
- Pushing Out Cold Air: The air that exits the front of the fan is now significantly cooler (often 15°F to 30°F cooler than the intake air) and slightly more humid. The huge fan then blasts this chilled air across your warehouse or workspace.
Here are the best applications:
- Semi-Open Industrial Spaces. In places like auto repair shops, airplane hangars, or loading docks, the doors are constantly opening and closing (or are never closed at all).
The Problem: Standard A/C works by cooling a sealed "envelope" of air. If the door is open, your expensive cold air just falls out onto the pavement.
The Solution: An evaporative cooler works on a "flow-through" principle. It doesn't care if the doors are open; in fact, it performs better with cross-ventilation, constantly replacing hot stagnant air with a fresh, chilled breeze. - Warehousing and Logistics. Large warehouses are notorious for "heat soak," where the roof absorbs solar energy all day and radiates it down onto workers.
Spot Cooling: Instead of trying to cool a 50,000-square-foot building (which would cost a fortune), a Quietaire can be rolled directly to the packing station or the shipping lane to provide spot cooling directly for the staff. - Agriculture and Livestock. Heat stress is a major issue for livestock health and productivity. Dairy Barns and Stables: These units are frequently used in barns to keep cattle or horses cool.
Greenhouses: Plants thrive with the added humidity that evaporative coolers provide, whereas standard A/C tends to "dry out" the air, which can wilt sensitive flora. - Outdoor Events and Hospitality. If you’ve ever been to an outdoor wedding or a sideline at a football game in a dry climate, you’ve likely seen these units.
Patios and Sidelines: They are perfect for cooling large groups of people in semi-covered outdoor areas where there is plenty of natural airflow to carry away the added humidity.

Evaporative Coolers
Portable evaporative coolers use air movement and water to cool large areas such as factory floors, warehouses, patios. Air passes over a 6 inch thick saturated cooling pad that can drop the temperature up to 26˚F.
