Fantech SHR Residential Heat Recovery Ventilators HRVs

A Heat Recovery Ventilator is a complete whole house ventilation system that incorporates a supply motor and an exhaust motor in one unit. It is designed to bring a continuous supply of fresh air into the home while exhausting an equal amount of contaminated air. HRVs use a special aluminum core that transfers heat from the exhaust air stream to the incoming air stream. Fresh incoming air is tempered by the heat that is transferred from the outgoing air so you save on energy costs. HRVs are designed for colder areas of the country that have longer heating seasons as well as drier desert areas of the South.

#1 Q:   What are the different choices for defrost mode on the SHR units? What is the difference between the SHR units and the Hero HRV units?
A:   There is damper defrost where a door closes and it cycles household air through within to protect the core. The other just shuts itself off periodically. The SHR is a legacy model with side ports and the Hero has top ports and an all new design. I would go Hero or Atmo as those are the current designs.

#2 Q:   Can I add to or replace the 2 filters in the SHR 1504 with a high MERV filter that will filter out smoke particles? Thanks.
A:   If you want to reliably filter out smoke particles you would need a MERV-15+ or a HEPA filter. The fans in the SHR are not rated for that pressure drop and you will get an airflow imbalance. You can try a MERV-11 and see if that helps. Otherwise, you would need a HEPA filter box and an auxiliary fan to pull the air across the very restrictive filter feeding the SHR.

#3 Q:   PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW RECIRCULATING DEFROST WORKS.
A:   A damper closes off the intake port and cycles house air through the unit to protect the core. Then opens back up after a time.
